The program running on the POS system is what is commonly called the POS system software. It (POS software) acts as the terminal's operating system, just like laptops running on Windows or Mac, or phones running on Android or iOS. Users will enter data on the goods they will sell in the POS software interface, count costs and transact financially. The POS software, with the aid of available hardware, lets the consumer process orders in a retail store. Many large retailers use POS system software that is custom-built to suit their specific needs. As a consumer would expect, POS device software solutions are as diverse as the retail industry needs. Also, hotels use a version of a simple algorithm for POS applications to accept reservations, assign rooms and bill their guests.

Inventory software applications now available on the market allow users to track use, monitor changes in the cost of unit dollars, measure when they need to reorder, and evaluate stock rates on an item-by-item base.  To add on, with point-of-sale (POS) software systems, they can also manage inventory right in the cash register. POS software tracks every transaction as it occurs and the inventory reports are still up to date. Better still, they get far more sales details than a customer might gather with a manual program.

They can make better decisions about ordering and merchandising, by running reports based on this knowledge. There is plenty of common POS systems software that allows users to use add-on devices at their checkout stations, like electronic money drawers, barcode scanners, credit card scanners, and invoice or receipt printers.
