Pharmacy Inventory Management
Any inventory management system should aim to increase customer service and profitability as much as possible while minimizing investment. A well-managed system must provide excellent customer service, rare stock-outs, low returns, limited ordering, ownership costs and positive cash flow. A poorly managed system obviously has the opposite effect.
There are many inventory systems, the simplest of which is to note a missing product in a control binder, to the most sophisticated computer system. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Most pharmacies use a permanent inventory method. This system consists of constantly monitoring all items in the stock. Before the age of computers, this method took a long time and its accuracy was limited by the quality of the data collected. Computers have made this method the most sophisticated and efficient inventory system possible.
All pharmacy software is capable of managing the maintenance of a permanent inventory. The arrivals of barcodes and live orders have greatly simplified the inventory management steps. Products can be entered into the system by scanning their UPC (Universal Product Code) or using the invoice. The prices can be updated directly by the supplier or by the vendor of the software. Check the inventory by manual counting and stock taking is usually done at least once a year.
